Do You Have Any Income Alternatives?

by Nigel Evans

Everyone is likely to remember the great recession of 2008 and 2009, when they started to think of income alternatives soberly as talk increased about people who were losing their jobs. Isn't it always the case that when things are going along smoothly and the economy is robust, people don't worry and in fact historically tend not to save any money at all. This "devil may care" attitude is not likely to be repeated anytime soon.

The rainy day certainly arrived with a vengeance during the great recession, as the unemployment rate doubled. People were reminded that they had no income alternatives and no alternative plans should be a primary source go away. How would they pay their mortgage or rent and meet the other family commitments? It is no wonder that there's been so much interest in alternative solutions.

Shocks can turn to disbelief and anger and ultimately realization, when your hours are significantly cut back or you even lose your old job. Now is the time to look inwardly and to assess the situation. Many people, however, find that after the shock wears off they are able to itemize certain skills or assets that they have and come up with a plan for the future. It may take this process, but most people are surprised.

When you are faced with a money shortage, think what talents you have available to you. Go back in your mind to your college years. It is likely that you had a particularly valuable skill of some kind. Were you able to write well? Were you particularly good at any one sport or another? Were you a good organizer? The chances are whatever talent you possessed back then could be utilized as one of those income alternatives today.

If you are a good writer, then you have an almost unlimited number of options available to you on the Internet. If you're able to write on a variety of subjects, there are always people, companies and organizations looking for your work. You could hook up with a news organization or a website and be called upon to provide regular and reliable material. Webmasters are always looking for content for their sites from those who are able to write well. This could be one of your primary income alternatives.

The field of Internet marketing is a huge opportunity, as revenues can be raised through correctly monetized websites and blogs. Generally, people set a site up to provide much sought-after information and valuable resources for people who are looking for solutions to their problems. You can do this too, by selling your own products or services that you come up with or by acting as an affiliate, effectively being the middleman between the buyer and seller.

There has been a considerable growth in websites online which seek to match together those who have a particular talent or skill with those who are looking for the same thing. This kind of freelancing can represent one of your income alternatives if you fall into this boat. Start off by looking at rentacoder.com, elance.com or odesk.com, all of which are highly respected and structured sites dedicated to this cause.

When you're looking for income alternatives you must of course be willing to clean your house first. By this, I mean cut down as much as you can on nonessentials, consolidate your spending as much as you can and look around the house to start getting rid of items which you do not use ever but which may have a value. You will be surprised what you are holding and don't place much value on, but others would.
